When my wife and I were engaged, I had to spend a year overseas and during that year, way before cell phones and internet, I wasn't able to come home, or to call her, with two exceptions.

I got to make a Ham radio call on a scheduled appointment basis, but neither of us could even hear each other and I found out later, she'd cried for days. The second time, I got about a 5 minute call when I'd been gone around 8 months.

We wrote letters to each other every day and I kept a journal in a notebook, which I mailed to her every time a book filled up. She mailed me a piece of a jigsaw puzzle every day, and to feel closer to her, I would assemble it now and then. She sent me a small stuffed bull to keep in my locker to watch over me, and a picture of the similar bull she had bought for herself.

And we managed.

In 1992, I had to spend about 100 days in the Desert Storm area. This time, I had the ability to call for 10 minutes once a week.

And we managed.

And in March, we'll celebrate our 37th anniversary.
